Jurat Notarization in New York
A jurat is a notarial act in which the signer swears or affirms that the contents of a document are true, and the notary witnesses the signature and administers the oath or affirmation. Jurats appear on affidavits, depositions, and sworn statements. A document with a jurat clause must be signed in front of the notary — not beforehand.

Questions about jurats notarization
- What is the difference between an acknowledgment and a jurat?
- An acknowledgment is a notarial act where the signer confirms they signed the document voluntarily — but the signer can acknowledge a document they signed earlier, without the notary witnessing the original signature. A jurat requires the notary to witness the signature and administer an oath or affirmation that the contents are true.
- Do I have to say anything out loud during a jurat?
- Yes. The notary will administer an oath ('Do you swear that the contents of this document are true?') or an affirmation. You respond. This is the sworn statement that gives the jurat its legal force.
- Does the document specify which notarial act is needed?
- Usually yes. Look at the signature block — if it says 'Sworn to before me this ___ day of ___,' it is a jurat. If it says 'Acknowledged before me,' it is an acknowledgment. Bring the document and our notary will execute the appropriate certificate.
